Description

A delightful appetizer featuring caramelized onions and Gruyère cheese atop toasted baguette slices.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large baguette
  • 4 large yellow onions
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves
  • 2 cups shredded Gruyère cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Thinly slice the onions.
  2. In a large skillet, melt butter with olive oil over medium-low heat.
  3. Add the onions and salt, stirring occasionally for 30-40 minutes until they are deeply golden and caramelized.
  4. Stir in the balsamic vinegar and fresh thyme. Cook until the mixture becomes sticky and jam-like, then remove from heat.
  5. Preheat the oven to 400°F.
  6. Slice the baguette on the bias and arrange the slices on a baking sheet.
  7. Toast the baguette slices for 6-8 minutes until the tops are lightly crisp.
  8. Top each toast with the caramelized onions and shredded Gruyère.
  9. Broil for 2-3 minutes, until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
  10. Sprinkle with more thyme before serving. Serve immediately while hot.

Notes

Best enjoyed fresh out of the oven. Can pair with a side salad or a glass of wine.
