Description
Delightful homemade French baguettes that are crusty on the outside and soft on the inside, perfect for sandwiches or enjoying with soup.
Ingredients

- 3 1/2 to 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1 1/4 cups warm water
Instructions
- In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water and let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt.
- Add the yeast mixture to the flour and mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 60 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C).
- Punch down the dough, then shape it into two long baguettes.
- Place the shaped baguettes on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Let them rise for 30 minutes.
- Make slashes on the top of the baguettes with a sharp knife.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, until golden brown.
- Cool on a wire rack before slicing.
Notes
For a crispier crust, place a pan of water in the oven while baking. Store baguettes in a paper bag at room temperature for up to two days, or wrap and freeze for longer storage.
