- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup whole milk, warmed
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 4 large egg yolks
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar (for dusting)
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted (for brushing)
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine warm milk and sugar. Sprinkle yeast over the top and let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- Add melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract to the yeast mixture, whisk until combined.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together flour and salt. Gradually add dry ingredients to the wet mixture.
- Transfer dough to a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours until doubled in size.
- In a medium saucepan, heat milk until just about to simmer.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together sugar, egg yolks, and cornstarch. Slowly pour in hot milk while whisking continuously.
- Return mixture to saucepan and cook over medium heat until thickened, about 5-7 minutes. Stir in vanilla extract and butter.
- Let custard cool to room temperature.
- Punch down risen dough, transfer to a floured surface, and roll into a rectangle.
- Spread cooled custard over the dough and roll it into a tight log.
- Place in a greased loaf pan, cover, and let rise for 30-45 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Brush top of dough with melted butter and bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown.
- Cool in pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
- Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
Notes
Serve warm or at room temperature. Best enjoyed with whipped cream and coffee or tea. Can be stored at room temperature for up to two days, refrigerated for a week, or frozen for three months.
